While US borders may still be closed due to COVID,  travel is starting to bounce back. Countries all over the world are re-opening their borders from lockdown, allowing for international movement.

What does this mean for people who want to teach abroad now? Right now, there are a whole bunch of countries that you can travel to.

Are Borders Open in Europe?




Europe has got a solid hold on the Coronavirus, meaning you can teach English pretty much anywhere. 

Whether you’re thinking of teaching English for your gap year in Europe or building a solid international career, you can jet off right now!

It’s actually easier to ask which are the countries that you can’t travel to teach English in right now.

These are the countries with restricted travel right now:

  • Armenia
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina (unless you’re from a neighboring country)
  • Georgia
  • Moldova
  • Romania
  • Russia

If you want to teach abroad now, you can head to these countries. Remember that you will need an international-TEFL certification to teach in these countries:

  • Albania (unless you’re from Greece)
  • Andorra
  • Azerbaijan (you’ll need a test showing you’re negative for COVID)
  • Austria (you’ll need a medical certificate with microbiological tests in English, French, German or Italian — this needs to be done no earlier than four days before travel)
  • Azores (you’ll need a negative COVID test to get in, and you’ll need to do another one if you’re there for longer than a week)
  • Belarus (if you’re from the UK)
  • Belgium (if you’re from the UK and the EU)
  • Bulgaria (but you have to self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Croatia ( you might need to fill in this form to help ease your entry process)
  • Cyprus (some countries are included but Brits aren’t allowed in until July 15th)
  • Czech Republic (if you’re from a green country, then you’re allowed to teach here)
  • Denmark (check this list to see if your country is allowed or restricted)
  • Estonia (you can enter if you don’t have symptoms but you might have to self-isolate)
  • Finland (only if you’re from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, or Lithuania)
  • France (you might have to self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Germany
  • Greece (Brits can’t enter until July 15th)
  • Hungary (essential travel only)
  • Iceland (you’ll either have to pay for a $120 test or self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Ireland (you can enter by ferry from the UK but you’ll have to self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Italy
  • Jersey (fill in this form before traveling)
  • Latvia (you might have to self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania (you might have to self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Luxembourg
  • Madeira (you’ll need a negative coronavirus test)
  • Malta (Brits can’t enter until after 15th July)
  • Netherlands (open to Schengen countries but you may have to fill in a ‘fit-to-fly’ form)
  • Norway (some countries can visit for work, but most restrictions will be in place until discussions on July 10th)
  • Montenegro (only to European countries that have 25 or fewer cases to every 100,000)
  • Poland
  • Portugal (you’ll have a health screening on arrival)
  • San Marino
  • Serbia (you’ll need to contact the local embassy to see if you’re eligible to enter Serbia to teach English)
  • Slovenia (you will be denied entry if you display COVID symptoms)
  • Slovakia (you’ll need a negative coronavirus test)
  • Spain ( you’ll need to provide personal details, history of COVID contact, and submit to a health screening)
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland (only EU and EFTA countries)
  • Turkey (you’ll need to fill out a passenger locator form and take a COVID test if you show symptoms)
  • Ukraine (red zone countries will need to self-isolate for 14 days after entry to Ukraine)

Where Can I Teach Abroad Now in North America?




The borders to the USA and Canada are closed right now. Canada does have a little leeway, but the lockdown is pretty tight.

Can I Teach English in Asia Right Now?




Right now, there are still very strict restrictions on countries like Thailand, China, Vietnam, Israel, and Japan.

However, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of places in Asia where you can teach abroad right now.

Want to teach English abroad in Asia? Consider getting a TEFL teaching job in:

  • Bangladesh (you’ll need a medical certificate issued with the last 72 hours)
  • Cambodia (you’ll need proof of medical insurance, and a visa before arrival, which is pricey)
  • Iran (but there aren’t many flights in and out)
  • Lebanon ( you’ll need to take a test before you travel and one when you arrive)
  • South Korea (you’ll be tested on arrival and this can take up to 24 hours)
  • Taiwan (you’ll need a test that was taken within three days)
  • UAE (everyone can enter from July 7th, but you’ll need to fill out this form)
  • Uzbekistan (you can enter for business visits but rules are relaxing in July)


Asian countries won’t give you a teaching job unless you are an internationally-recognized TEFL teacher.

Where Can I Teach Abroad in Africa Right Now?




  • Egypt (you’ll need go self-isolate for 14 days)
  • Ethiopia (land borders are closed but if you’ll traveling by air, you need to self-isolate)
  • Liberia (you’ll need a test on arrival)
  • Mozambique (you’ll need to quarantine on arrival)
  • Tanzania (you may subject to enhanced screening)
  • Tunisia (you’ll need a COVID test that’s from fewer than 3 days ago)
  • Rwanda (you’ll need a negative coronavirus test from the last 72 hours)
  • Zambia (you’ll get a COVID test on arrival)

Can I Travel and Teach Abroad Now in South America?

Sadly, right now, most of South America is out of bounds to all travelers and TEFL teachers.

However, you can teach in Ecuador. You’ll need to sign a declaration form when you arrive, and bring a negative COVID test. All travelers will need to self-isolate for 14 days.

Are Borders Open in Australia and the South Pacific?

Basically, no.

The only place in this region that accepts TEFL teachers right now is French Polynesia. You’ll need a travel certificate, a medical certificate, and a health check on arrival.
